Right, then....

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Gray on Black leather. If there’s an option that isn’t included, I can’t fathom what it is. The EyeSight adaptive cruise control is a trip and works great! GF likes the heated seats and the sunroof. Daughter likes the heated seats in the back, and the HVAC vents. Gray wasn’t my first choice, but it does look good. Engine is smooth and it’s interesting getting used to no lag, like I had on the XC70.

What’s interested is that I’ve found more than a few of these that were owned for a couple of years (assume lease) then the second owner only had it for a short time, like 1 to 2 months... can’t figure out why the quick turn on the 2nd owner. Regardless, other than a couple of minor cosmetic flaws, it looks new at 31,800 miles.

I also realized that this is the first car I’ve ever owned that did not have a tape deck, which is a weird feeling.

Now, off to look for rooftop cargo cages and tent trailers...

Did you test drive both the 4 cylinder and the 3.6R? I’ve heard the 3.6 isn’t really worth it with the CVT, but I’ve always wanted to try it out. I did spend a lot of time with a 2014 Outback and it was an absolutely lovely car. The seats were heavenly.

It could be an oil consumption issue or not but keep your eye on it. Subaru is good about replacing the short block it’s just a pain to have your car out of commission for two days.

Some friends drove a 2.5 and said it was OK on the flats but a dog on the hills. Also, considering a trailer, so I wanted the extra power...

The oem roof rails are very difficult to fit Thule and Yakima load bars but there are some solutions. I have not tried yet but my Thule box fits on the stock bars fine, the bars are just curved.

Thanks! I was just trying to figure if the crossbars I had for the XC would fit...looks like I need to get the subie bars....

My wife’s 2.5 felt pretty darn slow when I first drove it, but I was going from a Hemi Magnum RT so My judgement was clouded. I saw you mentioned a rooftop tent, too. The bigger engine is probably a wise choice!

Cool! OK, you have the box and the basket. Which do you prefer?

Looks great! Underrated wheels too, I think.

I’ve got the Box, my dad has the basket, both made by Thule and sold through the Subaru dealer. I’m more of a fan of the roof box, as it offers more storage, and is usable in all weather conditions. In addition, his car seems to get more wind noise with the basket.

I’ll take a whack at the short second owner question. If you lease a car and buy it out, Carfax shows that as a two owner car...technically the bank owns it, then you do. I don’t know what Subaru residual values are like, but the cars seem to hold their value...it’s possible some people bought their cars off lease because the residual was less than the car was worth, then moved on to something different and used the equity in the car as kind of a down payment on the next one.

I tried so hard to have an outback. I love them. The one I bought was an undisclosed flood damaged car that ate a quart of oil in 500 miles, the valve cover bolts were sheering off, and I had no way to recover my money from the “dealer” due to shady legal jargon without a lot of investment. I was saddened by this...

I love Outbacks.

My mom has a 2017 2.5 and it is a fine automobile. I wouldn’t buy one for myself but I certainly wouldn’t object to having one in the family.

My previous generation has the built-in design as well. I don’t know if they’ve revised it, but I’d recommend crossing them once a month or so even if you aren’t using them. They have a tendency to get sticky and difficult to release if they sit retracted too long.

I’ll chime in here too as I own a 2.5 and have had a 3.6 loaner - it’s a definite upgrade but I think maybe not worth it new. But used for less of a price gap like OP did I would definitely consider.

Congrats! It’s a safe and  solid no nonsense wagon and I’m hlad you went for the 3.6R instead of the slowAF 2.5.

what is your opinion on the CVT?

No objection, but it feels a little weird not having any shifting. The power is just...there. Mind you I’ve only driven in 25 mph traffic so far, so opinions may change once I get some miles in...

Nice ride. I just sold my Moms old base Outback 2.5 to Carmax. I was amazed how well it held its value. They gave us a lot more than blue book.
